6 - 8 Math - Expressions and Equations 4

  • Bacteria In My Car
    • You are a scientist wondering how much bacteria has grown in the carton of milk that was left in your car. Students will explore concepts related to powers of ten, expressing large quantities, preforming operations expressed in scientific notation, and interpreting scientific notation generated by technology. Students will demonstrate understanding by determining the amount of bacteria that has grown in the milk carton and predicting how long it will take for a certain amount of bacteria to grow.
  • Dream Car
    • You are a graduate assistant working for a professor who is getting ready to buy a new car. Students will explore concepts related to regression models, equivalent numerical expressions, interpreting the slope of a graph, and linear equations. Students will demonstrate their understanding by presenting graphed data of the regression, including the line of best fit for the depreciation of the car.
  • New Car Pen
    • You are a contractor building an enclosure for a car. Students will explore concepts related to quadratic equations, points on a coordinate plane, and solving simultaneous linear equations. Students will demonstrate their understanding by presenting an equation for their best enclosure using the materials provided.

"Using PBL in my classroom allows me to encourage my students to trust themselves, question what they think they know, and discover new material without relying on information from me to move them along." - Kimberly Campbell
