6 - 8 Math - Functions 1

  • Town Manager
    • You are a town manager determining how many police officers your town needs for the upcoming year. Students will explore concepts related to graphing functions, interpreting linear functions within the variables, constructing comparative models of linear quantities, and determining rate of change. Students will demonstrate their understanding by presenting graphed data of the past and projecting needs for the future.
  • Water Park
    • You are an operations manager for a water park determining ticket prices for the next three years. Students will explore concepts related to creating linear equations, comparing graphed linear quantities, observing linear relationships between two quantities, calculating percents, and rate of change. Students will demonstrate understanding by defending their determined prices, both verbally and with graphs.
  • Krispy Kreme™
    • You are a financial analyst for Krispy Kreme™ determining revenue projections for the company.  Students will explore concepts related to graphing sets of functions that are compared to each other, representing them algebraically and graphically, constructing linear relationships due to rate of change, and presenting them graphically and verbally. Students will demonstrate their understanding by presenting predicted sales revenue using graphs and verbal explanation.

"Using PBL in my classroom allows me to encourage my students to trust themselves, question what they think they know, and discover new material without relying on information from me to move them along." - Kimberly Campbell
