Wake/UTD PBL helps educators discover an approach to learning that engages students and motivates them to achieve. Where traditional classrooms tend to focus on content delivery, we empower teachers to deliver an authentic learning experience to every student. In part, we do this through carefully-written cases designed to draw students into the process of inquiry, but tools are not enough to transform a classroom if no one in the classroom possesses the skill to use them. Teacher-training is critical in creating and sustaining an authentic learning environment.
Wake Forest School of Medicine Problem-Based Learning and the University of Texas at Dallas Project-Based Learning have partnered with the goal to raise student achievement by increasing teacher effectiveness. Our systemic approach builds instructional capacity at the campus or system level through the following activities:
- Establishing standards for quality instruction unifies instruction across a system. This impacts everyday instruction and allows teachers to provide and support authentic learning experiences for students
- Providing inquiry-based strategies and resources, such as Problem- and Project-Based Learning (PBL), that are aligned to our instructional standards provides consistency and more time for teachers to plan for supporting student mastery of content
- Implementation coaching extends formal experiences for teachers to job-embedded experiences providing support for specific challenges each teacher may face within their classrooms
- Leadership support focuses on providing instructional leaders the tools to communicate a clear, consistent instructional message as well as monitor and support the implementation of that message
